4 Underrated Attractions In Jamaica

Popular activities to be done in Jamaica include climbing the Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios, relaxing on Seven miles beach in Negril and horseback riding in Montego Bay. However there are other underrated attractions that we can enjoy. Let’s look at four such attractions (in no particular order) in Jamaica that are worth a visit.

1. Glistening Waters

Also known as Luminos Lagoon, this nighttime attraction can be found on the north coast in Falmouth and in only three other places in the world. However it is at this location that guests can truly be amazed by the brightest natural phenomenon called bioluminescence. Bioluminescence occurs when the living organisms in the water are disturbed.

Visitors may jump in for a swim or choose to simply dip their feet or hands and enjoy the glow around their bodies.

2. Castleton Gardens

Located in the parish of St. Mary is this gem which contains a river and a botanical garden. Plants such as strychnos which is used to make medicine and poison, velvet apple, West Indian Mahogany and specimen of coffee among others can be viewed here.

The Wag river which is comprised of clear cool water is perfect for a swim. You may also sit on one of the many boulders in the river and enjoy a relaxing day.

Castleton gardens is open every day between the hours of 5:30AM – 6:00PM except on National Labour Day (May 23 unless it falls on a Saturday or Sunday) and National Heroes Day (every third Monday of October).

3. YS Falls

St. Elizabeth is home to YS Falls where visitors can enjoy 7 different water falls. Some are however rocky and are not appropriate for swimming. The Life Guard on site will be happy to point out ones that are perfect for the swimmers among us.

The site also includes natural pools of shallow water which suit children and others unable to swim.

Other amenities of the site include canopy tour, tractor and jitney ride along with a gift shop.

The opening hours are 9:30AM – 3:30PM everyday except Mondays and national holidays.

4. Winnifred Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in Jamaica, Winnifred beach can be found in Portland. It consist of soft white sand perfect for a stroll or beach sports, sea grapes and West Indian almond.

Amenities on site include crafts shops, small restaurants that serve authentic Jamaican food.

Another pull of this property is its close proximity to other attractions. The historic Folly Ruins and Folly Lighthouse would be ideal of history buffs while the Portland Art Gallery is sure to have items on display that art lovers can enjoy.
