Jamaican Govt. receives praise from US Embassy and WHO

The Jamaican Government has received high praises from the US Embassy and the World Health Organization (WHO) for its effort in containing the spread of COVID-19.

In a social media post on his official account, US Ambassador to Jamaica Donald Tapia declared “We want to congratulate the GoJ and the MoHW for its timely reporting of COVID-19 cases and aggressive containment strategy. The MoHW has shown that one of the best defenses is appropriate public sensitization on preventative methods and the importance of early case recognition”.

Ambassador Tapia also commented on the condition of the Embassy’s employee who it had been reported confirmed with the COVID-19 virus. Describing the employee of being in “good spirits” the Ambassador said she was recovering well. He further stated that there have been no reports of local spread via contact to any U.S. Embassy employee.

The work being done by the Ministry of Health and Wellness was also acknowledged by the Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The Director-General in response to a recent post of Minister Tufton commented ”

Thank you so much for your leadership – and preparedness – for #COVID19, @christufton. #Jamaica Being ready for #coronavirus is key to pushing it back fast. Together, for a safer world!”

Minister Tufton had posted about the installation of the COVID-19 isolation ward at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

” UHWI is in the final stages of establishing its Covid-19 isolation ward. These wards will be equipped for remote monitoring, ventilators, ICU beds and all other requirements to ensure the safety of medical staff and the efficient recovery of patients,” stated the Minister of Health and Wellness.

As at Jamaica currently has 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Jamaica.
