The International Olympic Committee has finally, officially announced that Olympic 2020 has been postponed.

The sporting event was supposed to have been held in Tokyo Japan for the second time the first being in 1964.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan made the news earlier today as he mentions “I proposed to postpone [ the Olympics games] for about a year and president Bach responded with 100 per cent agreement,” referring to Thomas Bach, head of the International Olympics Committee (IOC).

Prime Minister Abe also expressed his hope that the games will be held no later that summer 2021.

This news should come as relief for many athletes and fans who have been calling for a postponement of the games due to concerns of the spread of COVID-19. However the loss of income to be felt by all involved – athletes, organizers and sponsors was surely one of the factors that delayed this decision.

Jamaica has in recent times shone very bright at previous games with the likes of Elaine Thompson, Omar McLeod, Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, and the now retired Usain Bolt bringing fame and prestige to Jamaican athletics. Fraser-Pryce had announced that the 2020 games were to be her last. Let’s wait and see what she decides with this new development.
