Young woman quickly found after concerns of kidnapping raised on social media

A young woman was quickly found after concerns of her kidnapping was raised on social media today, Saturday May 30. The author of the post mentioned that they “witnessed a kidnapping young girl a scream for her life.” According to the author, the incident occurred in Portmore, St. Catherine.

The post drew the attention of the police and an investigation was launched. The police has since issued a statement (see below) on the matter.

Police Statement


Following a thorough investigation, the Jamaica Constabulary force can confirm there was no kidnapping or abduction incident in Portmore, St. Catherine this morning.

On Saturday May 30, a Portmore resident reported that about 9:00AM, he saw a car driving along Westchester Drive with a woman abroad who appeared to be in distress.

The police immediately launched an investigation in the possible case of an abduction. The police Emergency Communication Centre scanned the registration plates of the vehicle believed to be involved in the incident.

Investigators were able to identify both the owner and driver of the vehicle. Units were dispatched to locate the owner, who lives in St. Catherine, while another police team was sent to make checks in the Westchester area.

Using technology, the vehicle and the owner were located along with the woman. Both parties assured investigators, that they are in fact in an intimate relationship and were earlier having a conflict.

Neither parties expressed a desire to file any charges. The couple was, however, referred to the JCF’s Domestic Violence Intervention Centre for counselling.

The police would like to thank persons on social media as well as persons in the community for their sensitivity to the matter and their assistance in helping the police with a swift investigation.
